Cité de l’Automobile

Mulhouse, France

The Cité de l’Automobile is the world’s biggest automobile museum. Located in Mulhouse, it houses 400 historic, prestigious models and racing cars that record the history of the automobile.

The facade of the main entrance is formed by a supporting structure of tensioned stainless steel ropes arranged vertically and horizontally. The resulting rope net is the base structure of the facade. The ropes are attached by a stainless steel node at the crossing-point. The nodes simultaneously serve as the retainers for the glass panels. The glazing is executed using prestressed laminated safety glass. Decorative elements in the form of cars and birds, suspended inside and out on cables, provide the visual finish to this unusual facade.
